About 3,400 people live there (as of May 2005).

Rebun Island floating on the Sea of Japan covers an area of 82 square kilometers. Mt. Rebun surrounded with hilly country is 490 meters in height and located in the center of the island. Steep cliffs stretch over the west coast against which the prevailing westerlies blow in winter, and a gradual mountain range stretch over the east coast.

About 300 kinds of flowers bloom in Rebun Island and therefore it is called a gfloating island of flowersh. There are many flowers which can only be seen on mountains more than 2,000 meters above sea level. A lot of tourists visit Rebun Island in the flowering season between June and August.
