Rebun Island

Rebun Island, which is 60 kilometers westward
from Wakkanai (Latitude: 4530f 14h N. Longitude: 1414f 16h E.),
is the northernmost isolated island of Japan and designated as
Rishiri Rebun Sarobetsu National Park. It has prospered in fishery
and tourism. About 3,400 people live there (as of May 2005).
Rebun Island floating on the Sea of Japan covers an area of 82 square kilometers.
Mt. Rebun surrounded with hilly country is 490 meters in height
and located in the center of the island. Steep cliffs stretch
over the west coast against which the prevailing westerlies blow
in winter, and a gradual mountain range stretch over the east
coast.
About 300 kinds of flowers bloom in Rebun Island and therefore it is called
a gfloating island of flowersh. There are many flowers which can
only be seen on mountains more than 2,000 meters above sea level.
A lot of tourists visit Rebun Island in the flowering season between
June and August. |
